The Scriptures are More Firm

In 2 Peter 1:19, the Apostle Peter wrote:

and we have the prophetic word more firm, to which you do well to pay attention...

In context, this “prophetic word” is the content of the Scriptures (vv. 20–21). In other words, Peter was saying that the Scriptures are “more fully confirmed”, or literally, “more firm” (KJV). A comparison is being made here. What are the Scriptures more firm than?

Previously, Peter had mentioned two of his personal supernatural experiences: at Jesus’ baptism and at Jesus’ transfiguration (vv. 17–18). Both these supernatural experiences were truly from God. Yet, according to Peter, the Scriptures were more firm compared to his experiences! He even directed people to pay attention to the Scripture rather than his personal supernatural experiences.

This teaches us that the Scriptures are the highest revelation from God. Therefore, we should learn and discern the truths of God by the Scriptures alone, and not by anything else; not by feelings, circumstances, or even supernatural experiences—even if those experiences were truly from God!
