Can Christians Lose Their Salvation? (John 15)
Asher Chee |Jesus’ saying about the True Vine (John 15:1–10) seems to imply that a Christian can lose his salvation.
It is certainly true that the unfruitful branch represents a person who is not saved, since it is removed from the vine and thrown into a fire (v. 6). It also true that this unsaved person had some connection to Jesus, since Jesus described the unfruitful branch as “in me” (v. 2). So then, does this imply that a Christian can lose his salvation?
In the saying, Jesus provided more details about the unfruitful branch:
- In verse 4, Jesus said that a branch cannot bear fruit if it is by itself.
- In verse 5, Jesus said that without him, a person cannot do anything; he cannot bear fruit.
Therefore, the unfruitful branch represents a person who is only superficially “in Jesus”, but is really “by himself” and “without Jesus”! This person was never saved because he never truly believed in Jesus Christ for salvation.
The only way for a branch to bear fruit is to “remain in” the vine (v. 4). If a branch “remains in” the vine, then it will bear fruit (v. 5). Conversely, if a branch does not “remain in” the vine, then it will be unfruitful. Therefore, if a person is like an unfruitful branch, then it is because he did not “remain in” Jesus. Rather, he was “by himself” and “without Jesus” from the beginning.
True saving faith in Jesus Christ will continue until the end. The message of Jesus’ analogy of the vine is that a true believer in Jesus Christ will never lose his salvation because he will never stop believing, but he will “remain in” Jesus and bear much fruit.
